When it comes to the CDIO framework, Singapore Polytechnic (SP) is well-known in this area. SP adopted the CDIO framework and became a CDIO member in 2004. After several years of working, SP become one of the regional leader schools in Asia. This time, it’s our honor to invite Mr. Sin Moh Cheah to be our speaker, talking about “How to get started with CDIO”. Mr. Sin Moh Cheah has cultivated the CDIO framework with SP since 2007, and he becomes the CDIO Asia regional leader in 2022.

Before we adopt the CDIO framework, we need to know what the CDIO framework is. The framework provides students with an education stressing engineering fundamentals set in the context of Conceiving – Designing – Implementing – Operating (CDIO) real-world systems and products. It is an innovative educational framework for producing the next generation of engineers, it helps to improve the training for engineers. The CDIO Initiative not only can be used in the Engineering area but also can be used in other areas, such as in Information Technology and Computing area. Nowadays, the CDIO Initiative is useful for producing the next generation of professionals. It was developed to solve the problems and to provide suggestions.

CDIO is essentially about “educational quality improvement”. Many schools adopted it to design/redesign curricula. Mr. Sin Moh Cheah told us that the provision of quality education is the Interaction between 3 elements of educational program design, quality assurance, and program accreditation.

After comprehending the CDIO framework, we need to know to implement it. The activities within CDIO Initiative are based on two big questions: what to teach and how to teach. CDIO Syllabus is the instruction for what to teach, it has 4 parts at 4 levels of detail. CDIO Standards is the instruction for how to teach, it has 12 standards. Mr. Sin Moh Cheah recommended newcomer starts with standard 1 (The Context), 2 (Learning Outcomes), and 11 (Learning Assessment), particularly with standard 1 and 2.

We learned a lot from Mr. Sin Moh Cheah, he introduced the CDIO Initiative from shallow to deep, and provide several examples for our reference. After the seminar, our acquaintance with CDIO is deeper. We believe what we learned from the seminar would be very useful for CYCU to redesign the curriculum in the future.
