在輸血前， 血型測試是一個重要的檢驗，以確保捐血者及受血者的血清相容性。本研究使用微量血液樣本，以微流道系統檢測紅血球凝集程度，利用電性量測法可正確分成臨床上所需之5 級凝集程度，即非凝集(Non-agglutination，level 0)到強凝集(Strong agglutination，level4+)，可幫助醫生在進行輸血前做正確判斷。

Since the beginning of my teaching career, my research focus has been on biomedical micro-electromechanical systems (Bio-MEMS). In the past five years, the focus has been on protein chip with nickel-cobalt electrodeposited surface and blood-typing microfluidic system.
(1)Protein chip with nickel-cobalt electrodeposited surface
Based on the theory of immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC), a protein chip with Ni–Co alloy layer fabricated by electrodeposition was developed to immobilize histidine-tagged proteins for biochemical analyses. The protein adsorption is through the histidine, based on the technique of IMAC and irrelevant to the species of proteins. Therefore, this Ni–Co alloy coated protein chip has the specific binding capability to immobilize functional proteins.
(2)Blood-typing microfluidic system.
Blood typing assay is a critical test to ensure the serological compatibility of a donor and an intended recipient prior to a blood transfusion. A microfluidic blood typing system using a small quantity of blood sample to determine the degree of agglutination of red blood cell (RBC) was studied in this research. By the electroanalytical measurement, five levels from non-agglutination (level 0) to strong agglutination (level 4+) can be discriminated, conforming to the clinical requirement to prevent any risks in transfusion.
In addition, my lab and ChipMOS Technologies Inc. have a collaboration plan. So far, dozens of master students who were trained from my lab have entered ChipMOS Technologies after graduation.

Conducting a research is a collaborative process instead of a work to be done alone. It requires funding as well as support from mentors and other team members. Therefore, I would like to express my sincere thanks to Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology and other organizations for funding my research project. When certain equipment was required for measurement, you were there to help, allowing me to obtain complete results for the research project.
Conducting a research is also an exploration facing many bottlenecks and countless experimental failures. In addition, submitting a paper to academic journal involves the loneliness in writing the paper and the possible setbacks of being rejected by the journal. However, this is also a process of cultivation, personal growth, and an important training especially for graduate students. As graduate students will enter the workplace right after graduation, cultivating their abilities and attitudes will construct the cornerstone of their future success. Conducting research and teaching are indeed inseparable.
My lab requires graduate students to cultivate their ability to think independently and to solve problems. When encountering difficulties in an experiment, one must be able to observe the reasons for the failure, think about the right direction, and have patience and firm stamina in order to get through the obstacles and obtain fruitful results. On the journey of life, I also hold the same value and hope to grow together with my graduate students.
