Adopting the CDIO Framework for curriculum redesign

 

This roundtable aims at engaging participants with greater in-depth understanding of how the CDIO Framework is used to drive curriculum design (or redesign). It builds on the earlier (online) session whereby 3 Core Standards namely 1 (The Context), 2 (Learning Outcomes) and 11 (Learning Assessments) were covered, and broad approaches to adopt and implement CDIO (via a 5-year plan) was also shared. This roundtable will offer participants opportunities to probe deeper on CDIO Implementation, including how to organize a core team of “CDIO evangelists” to spearhead the process. This roundtable will also continue with the earlier session by further exploring the stakeholder engagement process, to identify the key skills and attitudes needed for the workplace of the future. This can then be followed by a discussion of the next step, such as how to design an integrated curriculum (CDIO Standard 3) to translate the stakeholder requirements to a 4-year curriculum that meaningfully sequence the learning tasks to develop the required skills and attitudes. This will include a gap analysis to identify shortfalls in coverage in existing curriculum vis-à-vis desired outcomes based on stakeholder needed, and a revised curricular map aimed at closing the gaps. Efforts by the chemical engineering program in integrating sustainable development will be shared.
